Gypsy camp

The Sinti and Roma were persecuted as "Gypsies" by the National Socialists. On Heinrich Himmler's order, starting in March 1943 all "Gypsies" living in German-controlled territory were deported to concentration camps, including more than 20,000 who were sent to Auschwitz. They were lodged in a separate block, the "Gypsy camp" (Zigeunerlager). In August 1944, 3,000 of those still alive were gassed.
